Presenting the first 5 years of Hub work at UK Committee for the UN Ocean Science Decade

Hub Knowledge Exchange Associate Milica Prokic shared key achievements and insights from the first five years of Hub work at UK National Committee for the UN Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. On 10 March 2025, Milica was invited by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to speak , at an event hosted by the Royal Society and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) about the Hub work over the past five years, which coincided with the first five years of the UN Decade.

Marking the halfway point of the Decade, the event brought together researchers, practitioners and policy makers to highlight work already underway as part of the UNOceanDecade. Speakers discussed the UK’s policy approaches and priorities over three workshop sessions, covering topics such as sustainable use and management of the ocean, climate-smart communities and human-ocean connections.

Milica contributed to the workshop session, chaired by Dr Emma McKinley from the Marine Social Science Network from the Cardiff University, on the UN Decade Challenges 9 and 10 and the importance of the connections between the ocean and humankind. She presented on Hub work on the integrating Indigenous peoples’, local coastal communities’ and small-scale fishers’ ways of knowing the ocean in decision and policy-making processes, showcasing Mapping for Justice, Hurnin: People of the Sea, Ghana Fisherwomen Pop-up Legal Clinics, and the Empatheatre art-based research undertaken as part of the One Ocean Hub.
