AREA OF EXPERTISE: Environmental law, Marine law and Human Rights law.

AFFILIATION: University of Namibia, Namibia

My research focuses on a socio-legal approach, as it analyses theories from disciplines such as ecology, geography and sociology such as the commons theory and socio-ecological resilience to the International, African regional and national law that constitutes Namibia’s legal framework applicable to ocean governance. The objective of such a transdisciplinary approach is to promote and advance the active and meaningful participation in decision-making of marginalised coastal communities in ocean governance in Namibia. This will further advance equity and fairness in terms of benefits arising from marine resource use and access for the coastal communities whose rights to life, food and an adequate standard of living are dependant on the use of marine ecosystem resources.

Impact

I am of the view that my research will advance the application of Resolution 489 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’s Rights in Namibia, which is on Recognition and Protection of the Right of Participation, Governance and Use of Natural Resources by Indigenous and Local Populations in Africa – ACHPR/Res. 489 (LXIX)202.

I am also of the view that my research will advance the amendment of the Marine Resources Act in Namibia, which is the framework law pertaining to ocean governance in Namibia, to ensure that in contains clear provisions granting coastal communities in Namibia, marine resources rights of governance, use and access.

Making waves

In September 2023 I actively presented at a workshop highlighting “fair and inclusive decision-making for a healthy ocean whereby people and planet flourish”, presenting on climate change and marine spatial planning to small-scale and large-scale fishing communities in Luderitz, Namibia – read more >>
