Climate Change and Biodiversity
“This chapter explores the need for synergy between the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the international climate change regime. It emphasises that climate change is a significant driver of global biodiversity loss and stresses the importance of addressing both challenges in a coordinated manner to avoid irreversible biodiversity decline. The negative trends in biodiversity and ecosystems have adverse impacts on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to climate change. The chapter highlights the vital role of biodiversity and ecosystem services in climate change adaptation and mitigation. It recognises the urgent need to protect ecosystems’ capacity to store carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The CBD provisions, although not explicitly mentioning climate change, can be interpreted as relevant to address it as a driver of biodiversity loss and to ensure consistency between biodiversity and climate change laws. The CBD calls for integrating biodiversity concerns into climate change plans, regulating climate change-related activities, and preserving the rights and knowledge of Indigenous peoples and local communities…”
